Metal Munchkin

So, on a whim today while I was at school playing in the studio, I decided that I would transform my baby sister a touch. It was really fun considering she is by NO means "metal". I had to teach her how to do the 'devil horns'. We had a good time and I think she enjoyed being a little out of her element.

ps~ on a side note, I would like to say congrats to my beautiful baby sis. She had an awesome day today. Came out with me to do a shoot, went out for dinner with her man to celebrate their 3rd anniversary, went to see a movie... then got engaged. Congrats kiddo, love you with all my heart! "I'm back in the saddle again!"

So, after a minor absence from the local rock scene due to lack of inspiration and motivation, I've jumped back into it full force. I was lucky enough to be able to shoot Priestess when they passed through town last weekend, and there are a bunch of awesome local shows coming up right away!

What better way to get some of my creativity back then to remember why I got into this in the first place! I love photography and I love music.

Portraits, of the Film variety

So, those other pictures of my baby sister were done with my digital, but for the assignment, we were supposed to shoot a roll of film on one subject, so that's what I did, and these are what I got. Can't wait to start showing some people up in the darkroom! Get some of these baby's printed off! Oh good times are a-coming!

So, we studied portraits in our analogue class, and I decided to take some of my beautiful baby sister. The assignment was supposed to be in shot with film (and it was) but I decided to do some digital as well.
My baby sis is also a make-up artist, so it added a nice touch. Being on of my best friends, she's one of the easiest people for me to photograph because we have that comfort level and conection with each other.

Happy Thoughts

Alright, so it's thanksgiving, and I decided that I would share what I'm thankfull for. You'll have to pardon the photo quality, because alot of it is just snapshots.
My family, my friends, my pets, people I care about, and generally refer to as my happy thoughts. They are all what I am thankful for. I love them all, and I wouldn't trade them for anything :)

More Film Fun

I miss shooting in film! I love the fact that waiting in line to get film processed is a little bit like christmas! The only problem is, that as soon as I'm done a roll, it has to go in NOW! Then, once I see my shots, I tear every aspect of them apart and can't wait to go try again! (only problem is, it gets a little expensive after a while, which is why I wanted a digital). It's nice to have a reason to go back to that medium of photography!
I can't wait until I get to developing and printing my own pics! Going to be awesome, but in the mean time, here's a taste of what I've been up to, using my dearest father's 1970's manual Nikon!

Time Exposures

So, I decided that one aspect of the photography world that I would love to get to know better is time exposures. Night time streets, skyscapes, lightning. I've tried this technique a few times but have not yet mastered it.

As soon as I can find a waterfall, I'm going to attempt this technique (oh flat flat Manitoba and it's lack of waterfalls). I love the softness and flow of the water and I can't wait to try to capture an image like this one.

Of all the styles of time exposure photography, storm chasing and lightning pictures have always been up there on my favourites list. This is the style of time exposures that I have attempted the most, although my first few tries were unsucessful. I'm excited to learn more about it and give it another go, although it's going to have to wait until next summer.

Well, I'm not online looking at photo's nearly as much as I should be, but one of my favorite sites to go by from time to time is http://rahim.net/ . His work with lighting is just amazing. Although, if you're not a fan of glamor, fetish or nudes, you may want to stay away.
Another reason I like his work so much is because he's a local artist.

For those of you that need something a little more reserved yet awe inspiring all the same, there's the good ol' National Geographic Photography site. First Roll in over a year...

First roll of film that I've shot in over a year. I'm a little bit out of practice, although I'm excited to be shooting in film again. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy it. These are the best shots from the first roll of B & W. I actually forgot some times that I was shooting in Black and White so some of the pictures look a little bit on the busy side, but all in all I think it was mostly a sucess.

Lines??

A beautiful Saturday afternoon wandering the West End area looking for things that make me thing of lines. (which ends up being mostly walls, and stairs, and fences... lots of fences). It was deffinatly a fun shoot to do seeing as there are a great many ways to protray lines. For anyone who's looking for a nice area to wander around in, the Wolsley area is a beautiful area to shoot in.

First School Shoot!

First digital shoot for school. We were supposed to take between 30 and 40 shots, no deleting, no editing allowed. So in other words, far more difficult then I had imagined. Anyhow, these are them. The good, and the bad.

yet again...

So, blog number 2 is going to be pretty much the same as blog number one. I appologize for repeating myself if it happens.

This would be Industry Studies Assignment 1. Create a blog. Done. Title? Done. Description, done. Links to all my fellow class mates? In progress but will be done as soon as I have the info needed.

Now, onto the good stuff. What first attracted me to photography. Well, there is a photo of a man I have added to my blog (the one on the right), and it would be he that opened my eyes to photography and taught me to see the world in a different way. My dad. I remember looking at album after album of his photos when I was younger. To this day I will still go back and look at pictures he's taken over the years. Maybe, once I'm finished this course, I will be able to teach him a thing or two.

So far, everything I have learned I learned from my father. In this course I hope to learn things that he wasn't able to teach me. Mostly darkroom techniques (although I'm pretty sure he know's a bit about that). I can't wait to get my hands dirty. To learn the mechanics behind what I've always loved (pictures, and how they work, digital and film, printing and editing). It boils down to the simple fact that I want to learn everything there is to know. I know it's alot, but I like dreaming big.

As for "a brush with greatness", I have had the opportunity to meet people that are known through out the music scene. Like the gentelman in the photo above and left. Gilby Clark of "Guns and Roses" (or Rock Star Supernova if you prefer) passed through town with his solo band and they played at a venue that I am frequently taking pictures at, so I was lucky enough to talk with him for a bit and shoot the show they played. I was able to do the same thing when GOB and Econoline Crush passed through. I hope some day to be good enough and known enough to get press passes for bigger venues.... Some day :)

let the games begin

So, here we all sit on day two, and we're supposed to go over what we love to take pictures of. I thought we did that yesterday.

Well, personally, I'm a rock star. I'm a metal head. Your overall music junkie. Since I seem to find myself attending local shows so often, and I'm head over heels in love with the local music scene, I will more often then not be taking pictures of what ever band happens to be playing, and I love every second of it. If i could make a career of that alone, I would die a happy girl.

My friends, my family, my man, my pets or who ever else happens to be around are also often found to be subject to my shutter-buggieness. Of that list, I think the animals appreciate it the most, and my family the least. I came to the conclusion this past summer that organizing a group family photo with a family the size of mine is not as easy as my dad always made it look.

Alright, so, cheers to everyone. Looking forward to a long, interesting, exciting year.
